Twenty-five San Juan teachers receive STARS Grants
San Juan Education Foundation puts resources in classrooms

March 30, 2011 …Twenty-five teachers from throughout the San Juan Unified
School District have been awarded grants totaling $10,000 to help fund programs
in science, technology, arts, and reading from the San Juan Education Foundation (SJEF).

Projects that will benefit include theatrical productions and a variety of art
experiences, the purchase of technology to download e-books, a reading
program using alumni mentors, and drums to teach techniques and integrate with
movement, visual and language arts concepts.

“California’s budget problems have seriously impacted the ability of our schools
to continue important academic programs, and we believe it is critically important
to do everything we can as members of the Sacramento community to enrich the
classroom experience and offer support to teachers who want to use their creativity and innovation to challenge their students,” said SJEF Board Chair Charlene Mattison.

The San Juan Education Foundation, an independent, non-profit organization that
supports San Juan schools, awards grants in the fall and spring of each school year.

The Foundation’s Board is comprised of community, business and education
leaders, who bring professional expertise, knowledge of community resources and
the creativity necessary for a fresh approach to helping teachers help their students to thrive.
